Berlin Candy Bomber Comes to Hailey

The skies over Hailey will be dotted with tiny parachutes at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, each chute bearing candy for local school kids waiting below. A re-enactment of the Berlin Candy Drops will take place at the Wood River High School football field. Col. Gail Halvorsen (USAF Retired), who started the candy drops over Berlin in 1948, will describe the Berlin airlift and his unique role in it at the presentation at the Community Library after the candy drop, May 26 at 6:00 p.m.

The event is one part of the re-dedication of the newly refurbished National Guard Armory at 311 Cedar Street in Hailey. A dedication will be held Saturday, May 28 at noon and an open house will be held Sunday, May 29 from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Dr. Tom Crais, who served Col. Halverson while stationed in Berlin at Tempelhof airfield as an Army and Navy flight surgeon. Dr. Crais needs help with creating the parachutes. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Dr. Crais at 788-7700.
