Welcome to Second Grade

Welcome to second grade at Bellevue Elementary.  As second grade teachers we work closely together to provide a safe and complete education for your child.  We believe that home and school teamwork is important to every student's success.  We look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year.

Reading

In second grade the students are reinforcing and learning reading skills to help them become independent life long readers.  These skills are taught in a variety of learning styles and classroom settings.

We use the Houghton Mifflin reading program in the Engilish classrooms and Scott Foresman (Lectura) in the Spanish classroom.  The reading program is theme based.  They provide a variety of phonemic awareness activities, phonics instruction, spelling, and practice in all areas.  Fluency and comprehension skills are a focus in second grade reading.

Please visit Houghton Mifflin's website for more information on our reading program: Houghton Mifflin Eduplace

We always look forward to working with you and your child!

Math

Our math goal in second grade is to build confidence and help the children learn a variety of strategies for now and in the future.

We use the Investigations math program.  This program strongly focuses on number sense, reasoning, and problem solving to help strengthen the students' mathematical understanding through questioning and reasoning.  The students are asked to solve math problems in a way that makes sense for them and then explain their thinking using their own words.  They learn math concepts through the use of manipulatives, games, exploration, and written work.

We believe it is important that home and school work together.  Our program includes various math activities and games to be completed at home.  It is also important for your child to practice math facts to 18 in addition and subtraction at home.   We have observed that students who are confident and fluent with their math facts learn new concepts more readily.

Student Sample - Project Based Learning  This link provides a sample of student work using project based learning.  In this teaching method, students demonstrate in-depth understanding of academic knowledge using 21st century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

Social Studies, Science, and Health

We have a full curriculum in all three subject areas.  Please view our District website for complete details.  We integrate language arts and math as much as possible in these areas.  The children also go on field trips and have special in-school presentations to help enrich their knowledge.  Much of the health curriculum is addressed in our Character Education program, and many science concepts are taught in Bellevue Elementary's Tech program.
