Mathematical Thinking - Belief Statement
At Bellevue Elementary School, we believe that math education is
fundamental to 21st Century Learning:
- Foundations of math start with experience and
opportunities to manipulate and build an understanding
of number relationship
- Understanding number relationships builds automaticity
in efficient and accurate computation
- Automaticity allows for retention and application of
essential math skills and concepts
- Applied math is the process of solving problems and
thinking critically to make sense of real-world situations
- Problem solving, using multiple strategies, builds
flexible thinking
- Flexible thinking leads to greater depth of mathematical
understanding
- Depth of mathematics builds relevance through
connections made across disciplines
- Math becomes relevant when students take ownership and
are able to explain their thinking
