Mathematical Thinking - Belief Statement

ImageAt Bellevue Elementary School, we believe that math education is fundamental to 21st Century Learning:

  • Foundations of math start with experience and opportunities to manipulate and build an understanding of number relationship
  • Understanding number relationships builds automaticity in efficient and accurate computation
  • Automaticity allows for retention and application of essential math skills and concepts
  • Applied math is the process of solving problems and thinking critically to make sense of real-world situations
  • Problem solving, using multiple strategies, builds flexible thinking
  • Flexible thinking leads to greater depth of mathematical understanding
  • Depth of mathematics builds relevance through connections made across disciplines
  • Math becomes relevant when students take ownership and are able to explain their thinking
