The 2010-2011 school year marks the 12th year of successful reading intervention using the Hailey Reading Clinic. The Reading Clinic is a unique way to deliver intensive, research-based instruction for struggling readers. It is based on a model of two hours of daily instruction in a small group setting. The program has proven to be successful for many students over the years as more than one-hundred students no longer require reading on an Individual Education Program.

Student selection is based on reading performance in the classroom and state-required testing such as the Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI) and the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Once parent permission is granted, the team gives a series of assessments that determines a student's reading skill. This information is then used to determine who will attend the clinic and plan for the intensive instruction using the Lindamood-Bell Learning Programs.

The Reading Clinic instruction is based on two hours of daily work over the course of eight weeks. The goal is that eighty hours of service/instruction will effectively make a change in a student's reading performance and meet student needs. It is not uncommon for students to make between six months and two years growth in word attack (sounding out unfamiliar words), three months to one year growth in word identification (reading sight words in isolation), one year or more in reading accuracy (reading of paragraphs), and one year or more in reading comprehension.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact any member of the Hailey Reading Clinic Team:  Kathy Parkinson, or Karen Gedde.
