Welcome to Fifth
Grade
Hemingway School has four Fifth Grade classes, with an average
class size of 20 students. One of our fifth grade classes
is Dual Immersion. Our teaching team is dedicated to
providing each child with opportunities to progress
academically, emotionally, and socially. We strongly
encourage our students to accept responsibility for their
learning, develop greater independence, and maintain high
quality work. Our flexible groupings in subjects, such as
math, allow students to feel successful while working at a level
that meets their needs and abilities.
Fifth grade has a large curriculum. We focus on U.S.
history, studying early explorers, the colonies, and the
Revolutionary War. Our students learn and use a variety of
map skills, with a focus on the United States. States and
capitals are memorized, followed by a U.S. map project where
land features, cities, and resources are creatively
presented.

In Science, we teach units in
earth science, environmental
studies, plant and animal cells, chemistry, and the use of the
scientific process. Our health units include the
circulatory and respiratory systems, as well as drug awareness.
Our students do a wide variety of writings during the year, with
a focus on the "Six Traits of Writing".

The language arts
program integrates reading, writing, and spelling. To
further enrich our reading program, we read chosen paperback
books in leveled groups. Accelerated Reader, or AR, is used for independent reading
practice with personal goal setting each trimester.
In addition to our regular curriculum, our students attend
"Specials" daily. These include Music, Art, P.E., and
TECH. Our fifth graders work extra time in the TECH Room
creating and publishing our yearbook, and video yearbook, as
well as putting together daily news shows, called HTV.
Once a week, a team puts together a weekly show that includes
clips from around the school and interviews with various people.
Fifth Grade field trips include an educational hike to Baker
Lake in the fall, a trip to the
Herrett Center in the spring,
and several walking trips to the
Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
We also schedule a trip to watch our local ballet performances.
Our field trips may vary from year to year, based on our current
curriculum and time constraints.
The Fifth Grade at Hemingway provides a solid foundation for a
successful transition in to middle school. We are so proud
of our school and our fifth grade students for their fine
accomplishments.
