Hemingway Elementary
School's computer lab is one of six "technology enhanced"
classrooms. In addition to new iMacs this year our lab was
upgraded with a Promethean Active Board, Promethean software,
and sound enhancement. All
students, Pre-K and Kindergarten through 5th grade, come to the lab once a week to
learn and apply computer skills. These skills are not
introduced as stand-alone applications, but integrated with grade
level curriculum.
The first Computer Skills Curriculum was introduced in 1999.
It was edited and
revised during the 2004-2005 school year and approved in March
of 2006.
The
curriculum is based around 6 standards:
- Basic Operations and Concepts
- Social, Ethical, and Human Issues
- Technology Productivity Tools
- Technology Communications Tools
- Technology Research Tools
- Technology Problem Solving and Decision Making
Tools
Students practice word processing skills which include
formatting text (changing font, font size, color, justification,
style), page layout, inserting graphics, saving, and printing.
Using the internet for research along with online safety is
stressed at all grade levels. An emphasis on keyboarding
skills begins in Kindergarten and progresses through 5th grade.
Presentation software (Microsoft PowerPoint) is introduced and
reinforced throughout all grades. Appropriate vocabulary is introduced and
reinforced during lessons. Painting and drawing with KidPix
begins in Kindergarten and is used for many projects.
Print Shop Deluxe is used to practice "desktop publishing".
The Idaho Standards Achievement Tests (ISAT) are
given in the computer lab.

Our Computer Lab is always a busy classroom!
