Science "Matters"

Did you know that "dry" ice is the solid form of the gas carbon dioxide, which is a normal part of our atmosphere?
"How can ice be dry?" you may wonder. Dry ice doesn't melt into a liquid state; it "sublimates", or goes directly into it's gaseous form. Since it doesn't become "wet", it's "dry".
What do you think happens when you put dry ice in a closed container, like a film canister?
Watch the video below and find out!

Spotlight on the Publishing House
Sunday, April 22, 2012
|
We are very proud of the Ernest Hemingway Elementary Publishing House, in place since 1990. Our "House" was started by Hemingway teachers Elaine Redman, Janet Cantor, Leslie Wilde, and Jana Firzpatrick.
The publication of children's writings is an essential element and wonderful incentive for the writing process. The
Publishing House gives students an opportunity to write for a real
purpose, providing an audience for their efforts, and acknowledges the
importance we place on this lifetime skill.
The Publishing House is located in a former storage closet and resembles the gift-wrapping section of a department store. Student authors choose the style they want for covers by looking at samples displayed on the wall. Supplies and materials are stored in labeled bins. Glitter, bubble letters and attractive scrapbooking paper (puppies, monkeys, snakeskin) are favorites.

Parent volunteers run the whole operation – typing student writing, creating the covers and binding the finished work so it is ready for presentation and enjoyment. Most books include an author page with a photo and some personal information about the author. Students even make dedications to siblings, parents, friends, teachers and animals. These books become keepsakes honoring the students’ efforts.

Our Publishing House was featured in a well-known national educator's magazine, the 1993 November/December issue of Instructor. The movement in education to connect children's writing to reading through publishing is here to stay. We are fortunate to have such a valuable and successful program in our school.
Published books will be featured in the upcoming Art & Literature Show!
