Physical
Education

The Physical Education program at
Hemingway Elementary School is based on district, state, and
national physical education standards and objectives.
It has been designed to introduce students to a wide
range of physical activities and sports, and to help promote
self-esteem, fitness, and life-long participation.
In
order to meet the needs and interests of each student, the
program includes a wide variety of developmentally appropriate
fitness, recreational, cooperative, play, and sport activities.
Lessons are designed to maximize practice time and to provide
choices for the students that will allow them to work at their
individual skill level.
Emphasis
is not on competition or skill, but instead on participation,
effort, respect, cooperation, and fair play.

Way-ta Walker
Way-ta Walker is Hemingway’s lunchtime walking program. It
takes place in the “upper” part of Atkinson’s park on most
Wednesdays during the fall and spring (see news letter for
specific dates). It is open to all Hemingway staff, students
(1st-5th), and their friends or
families. Students and staff collect “tokens” for each lap
walked that go towards a classroom competition (individual
competition in the 5th grade), and an overall
school goal. The total distance walked by the school is
tracked on a map on our Way-ta Walker bulletin board just
outside of the gym. In the past we have “walked” to New York
and back, through Europe, to the State Capitals, along the
Lewis and Clark Trail, along the Great Wall of China, and to
the White House and back. We generally average about 4000
miles (16000 laps) per year.
