Scholarship Awards at SCAS

Yesterday, SCAS held their annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony.  Our two graduating seniors who applied for scholarship aid, Danny Mills and Georgia Kyle, were well rewarded for their outstanding performance these past few years.  Danny Mills was awarded $13,000 over the next 4 years, and Georgia Kyle received $11,000 also over the next 4 years.

Pictured here are Judy and Cassi Shelly from the Tyler Memorial Scholarship, Will Duke from Ketchum Rotary, Debra Kronenberg from Wood River Odd Fellows, Audrey Bashaw from Dollars for Scholars, Sara Gorham from Sawtooth Board of Realtors, and Jeff Englehart of the Hailey Rotary. Not pictured was Dick Metz from the Dick Metz Scholarship Fund.

Thank you all for providing such wonderful opportunities for all our students.

2009 Graduation - May 27th at 11:00 AM

We invite friends of our school to attend our 16th graduation ceremony on Wednesday, May 27th, at 11:00 AM.  The graduation ceremony will be held at our school campus, 719 South 3rd Street, in Hailey.

We are proud to honor the achievements of our seniors:  Georgia Kyle, Daniel Mills and Hannah Stephenson.

Best-selling author Ridley Pearson is our commencement speaker.

A reception will follow that includes a reunion of past graduates to bid a fond farewell to Barge Levy, the dynamic founder and director of Silver Creek Alternative School.  His contributions to the educational community are too numerous to mention.  Please join us in celebrating a very special individual.

Souper Supper

April 27th marked our last Souper Supper of the year.  With the help and generosity of Power Engineers we were able to serve a picnic style supper.  Bing Parkinson and student Will Glahn Bar-B-Qued cheeseburgers outside while Kevin Ferry, Jeremy Alvey, Trisha Angel, and Cody Swenke helped out in the kitchen and dining room, serving over 80 people.  As you can see by the picture our students know how to clean up and have fun doing it.

Senior Project Presentations

Silver Creek Alternative School successfully presented three seniors on Friday, April 16, 2009.  Hannah Stephensen's presentation on Cosmetology with Kortnee King of Cari's Hair Care, Georgia Kyle and her Art Work at Hailey Elementary, and Danny Mills, Chess Tournament Director.  The students want to first and foremost thank their teacher, Jill Bailey, for walking them through this rite of passage.  Also we would like to thank our Judges--Paul Bates, Lorna Emdy, Darrel Harris, Jenny Long, Adele Savaria, and Eric Thomas--for taking time out of their busy schedules.

WRMS Teachers Luncheon

Silver Creek had another successful block with their Cooking Class. I think the teachers at WRMS would have to agree that we fed them very well throughout our stay.  The Students' final was to create a menu, buy, cook, and serve a lunch to the staff.  We had 35 teachers participating, buying their lunch from us at $7.00 -- a bargain at half the price.  The students served an Hawaiian Plate Lunch consisting of an appetizer, shoyu chicken, steamed rice, a fresh pineapple fruit kabob, and an individual blueberry or cheery cheesecake, drinks included.  We were told it was our best yet. A big thank you to all at WRMS.

Thanksgiving Baskets 2008

Our seventh year of collecting food and distribiting Thanksgiving Baskets was a huge success.  We handed out 205 baskets to needy families in the Wood River Valley, helping many people who otherwise would not have had a thanksgiving dinner.

We'd like to say a big thank you to Cindy Aschliman's and Gabby Diedrick's 3rd grade classes at Woodside Elementary and Tricia St. George's 3rd grade class at Hailey Elementary for  their hard work in sorting all the food donations for us.  We'd also like to thank Atkinsons and Albertsons for their donations of pumpkin pies.  Keegan Inc. out of Twin Falls for over 1,000 pounds of potatoes.  Community Action, Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Hunger Coalition for all the Turkeys.  And last but certainly not least, Rudi Boesch at WRMS, Mary Gin Barron at Woodside Elementary, Sarah Polk at Bellevue Elementary, Paula Collier at Hemingway Elementary, and Tricia St. George at Hailey Elementary as being our contact points at their respective schools.  Without all these Schools holding  food drives, we would not have been able to fill one basket.

The involvement of everyone in this project went above and beyond our expectations and once again proves what a wonderful community we live in.

We are the Dragons...

StudenteslThe students at Silver Creek Alternative School (SCAS) have a dynamic motto:  Own it, fix it, move on!

Our school offers an innovative and flexible learning environment to a limited number of students in grades 9 through 12 who don't thrive in a traditional school setting.  Our students must meet at least three state-mandated "at risk" factors.  They are appropriately referred through Wood River High School, and we are governed and abide by Blaine County School District policies.

Our small, dedicated staff focuses on each student's special gifts and needs.  Students receive a lot of individual attention to master the basics, while being given the opportunity to explore areas of learning that really appeal to them.  Our student's senior projects are wide-ranging and inspiring.

Many alternative learning experiences are available to SCAS students.  We encourage them to learn and be good citizens.  They are expected to participate in community service projects such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Souper Supper, and collaborative projects with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.  Every year we publish a year book, do a major presentation of senior projects, and hold a graduation ceremony.

We take pride in our students' achievements and invite you to learn more about our dynamic school.
