State Tennis is a double elimination tournament – the main draw determines the state champion and runner-up; after one loss players are in the consolation draw, which determines the #3and #4 positions. There is a “boys”title and a “girls” title – the mixed doubles points are split and count toward both titles.
Wood River tennis sent 7 teams to State; five teams made it to the main-draw semi-finals. Here’s a bit about each team’s journey:
Karl Wilander: State Champion! Karl played Josh Goodwin in the semi-finals in a match that drew the biggest crowd of the whole tournament. Josh had won the tournament for the past 2 years, and Karl hadn’t beaten him since he was 12. (click here for the Magic Valley story and picture). Karl won 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, and then went on to beat Dallas Hunt from Twin Falls High School 7-5, 6-2 in the finals.
Raleigh Grossbaum & Charlie Grabow (Sage School students): State Champions! Boys doubles was very competitive this year, with many matches going to 3 sets. Raleigh and Charlie had two 3-set matches on the way to the finals, and then beat a strong Columbia team 6-2, 6-1. (This is the second State Championship for Raleigh and Charlie – they played together and won in 2009-10 as sophomores)
Haley Cutler & Quentin Dowdle: Haley and Quentin used their strong net play, effective returns, great lobs, and willingness to go after EVERYTHING to make a huge impact at State. They won two tough matches before succumbing to Bishop Kelly (the eventual winner) in the semi-finals, and then won two marathon 3-set matches to take 3rd place in the mixed doubles. For once the “last match” at the tournament was one of ours!
Lily Richards: In her first match, Lily played aggressive singles against the eventual 4th place winner, Karlie Standley from Pocatello, losing in a tough match. In her second match Lily came up against a strong Skyview player, and her consistent serve and ground strokes were not enough for the win.
Josh Morell & Cole Caminiti: In a first-round match against the Cannon brothers – scrappy boys who would dive for anything – Josh and Cole pulled out a 3-set win. They won their second match to make it to the semi-finals of the main draw, and then lost to Columbia. In the consolation draw, they again met up with the Cannon brothers, and this time lost in 3 sets; the Cannon brothers went on to take 3rd place in the tournament.
Hannah Baybutt & Stephen Pfeiffer: Hannah and Stephen won their first match against a strong Hillcrest team. In their second match they lost the first set 3-6; they were down 2-5 in the second and came back to win that set 7-5; they lost a close third set. Playing their third match late in the day on Friday, they lost in another long 3-set match.
Sloan Storey & Erin Murphy: Sloan and Erin played aggressive doubles to win two straight-set victories to get to the main draw semi-finals. In the semi-final match, they lost to the very strong Bonneville team that went on to win the championship. In the consolation semi-final they lost to a tough Bishop Kelly team.
