College Day at WRMS

Staff and students celebrated College Day with
an Assembly on Friday, February 12th. Mrs. Clark's 8th
Grade Leadership class decorated the gym with University
Pennants and treated the entire school to loads of fun!
There was a soccer game between teachers and 8th graders, a
dance and cheer by the cheerleaders, a trivia game (Are You
Smarter Than a College Student), a pie eating contest, and a
hilarious relay with the Boy's and Girl's Basketball teams.
The "Kissing Game" featured Moms and got a roar of laughter from
the crowd as the boys removed their blindfolds and found out who
had kissed them. Everyone dressed in College T-shirts and
Sweatshirts to go along with the theme.

Gems of the 8th Grade
Rockhounds know that to find the
best mineral samples, one must be patient, diligent, optimistic,
and look carefully beyond the dirt to find the gem within to
bring out the brilliance that lay hidden. This was the
case when 8th grade Wood River Middle School students gathered
for the 16th Annual 8th Grade
Rock and Mineral Show.
Every 8th grade student was
required to collect and identify up to 20 different rocks and/or
minerals using skills and kno wledge gained in their Earth
Science class. With the help of peers, teachers, parents,
and a big boost from the Shoshone Ice Caves, the collections
harbored everything from boldly blue azurite to glistening,
gleaming galena and even your basic, boring basalt.
To add a bit of pizzazz to the
collections, students let their imaginations run wild when
displaying their specimens. They were to create a unique
display in which to showcase their samples and there was no
shortage of high quality, amazingly artistic endeavors to view.
There were playing fields, fashion shows, movie theaters, zoos,
rock
concerts, and even a mini sushi restaurant.
Many collections were worthy of a
small museum and have sparked student interest in, not only
nature's inorganic beauty, but perhaps an artistic nugget hidden
inside themselves. There are some who would argue that all
of the gems were mined out of the Wood River Valley long ago,
but there are a number of parents and teachers who know that
there are many hidden gems walking the halls of Wood River
Middle School.
More Amazing Rock Projects!

The "Pizza King" Retires
Earl Buell is a familiar face in the Blaine County Schools.
With over 16 years of service in Transportation and Foodservice,
he will be retiring this year. The students at WRMS know
him as the Pizza King, and the Leadership Class recently made him
a huge card of thanks.

Leadership Lights Up Holiday Parade

The Leadership students had fun trying to keep warm during the
Hailey Holiday Parade Friday night. About twenty students
decorated themselves, Paul Bates'
infamous
Bread Truck, and a borrowed shopping cart from Albertson's in
order to collect used holiday lights for the Hailey light
recycling project. By the end of the parade, the shopping
cart was heaped to the top with lights. Last year, the
project earned $1600 through Idaho Power's program to purchase
new, energy efficient LED lights for the city of Hailey and this
year the goal is to collect even more. The students were
recognized with a certificate of appreciation from the city of
Hailey.

7th/8th Grade Leadership Reading Buddies
7th and 8th grade Leadership
students were reading buddies for Andrea Anderson's 1st grade
class and Linda Anderson's 2nd grade class. Students
traveled to Hailey Elementary School to read books, do
activities, and help younger students with writing and craft
projects.

District Announces Early Release dates for Professional
Collaboration Days
The school district
successfully piloted early student release days during the
spring of 2009, and will continue with them during the 2009-2010
school year. The purpose of these early release days is to
provide school staffs with valuable time to collaborate on
issues critical to the success of your students.
The first such
early release day will occur Friday, December 4th, 2009.
Student will be released two hours early from school that day
(1:20 for middle school students), as well as on the following
days throughout the school year:
January 29,
2010
February 12, 2010
March 26, 2010
April 9, 2010

Food Drive A Success!
The
Library and Math teachers conducted their Annual Thanksgiving
Food Drive. Students at Silver Creek High School will use
the food donations to assemble food baskets and deliver them to
families in our community. We brought in 204 pounds of
food; which equates to over 157 meals served to hungry children
and families in our community! Thanks to the many students who
donated food!

Walking
into Wood River Middle
School on October 30th was like walking into the 70's!
Although there were many traditional Halloween costumes, a
majority of the students and staff elected to go with the
Leadership's theme of Wood (River) Stock! The 8th Grade
Leadership class ended the day with a Groovy Assembly and Far
Out Dance for the 7th and 8th graders.

6th Graders Attend Environmental Camp for the 34th Year!
Wood
River Middle School 6th Graders converged on the Cathedral Pines
Campground September 21-25 during the 34th Annual ROES
(Residential Outdoor Environmental School). Approximately 220
students completed three investigations over four days. All
investigations are experiential and focus on the environment.
During the two days at Cathedral Pines, students tested water
quality by testing pH, dissolved oxygen, and nitrates. They
dissected owl pellets, classified animals by comparing skulls
and made pledges to help our environment by conserving
resources. A local Fish and Game officer gave a presentation
and students were able to see and feel pelts of predator and
prey common to our area.
ROES has been an important part of WRMS
curriculum for many years because it gets students excited and
lays a foundation for a lifelong interest in Science. It is
also important because it is the first time that students from
Bellevue, Woodside, Hailey, and Hemingway Elementary schools
come together. The camp serves as a unique bonding experience
for both students and teachers.

Leadership Through Service
The WRMS Leadership students served over 70 dinners on
September 28th at the local Souper Supper. Students cooked
spaghetti with meatballs, salad, coleslaw, and pumpkin pie for
dessert. Everyone who ate loved the food and the students loved
working so hard to make someone else's life a little easier!
International Walk or
Bike to School Day/span>
Mountain
Rides will be at the Middle School on
Wednesday, September 23rd in
conjunction with International Walk
or Bike to School Day! Join more than 3,000,000 walkers
and bikers across the United States as they help to improve
safety, reduce traffic congestion, and promote healthy
lifestyles.
If you bike, walk, or skate to school on Wednesday
morning, be sure to check in at the Mountain Rides table to be
eligible for free giveaways and great prizes! If you live too
far away to participate, have your parents drop you within
walking distance of school.

Renaissance Home Connect is now Available

Renaissance Home Connect is a great way to monitor and encourage
your child's reading. It provides parents and guardians with a
snapshot of a child's reading progress, including average
percent correct on quizzes, number of points earned, and results
on the last quiz. Home Connect also allows you the opportunity
to automatically receive emails about your student's progress in
reading each time he or she takes an Accelerated Reader quiz.
