Recommended Reading Lists
Many advanced WRMS readers may be under the impression that
because they are strong readers, they should be reading books
intended for adults. Many of these students and their parents
might not understand that most popular adult books are not
particularly demanding. Most are written on a 5th or 6th grade
reading level. At WRMS, we believe that our skilled reading
students are better served if they challenge themselves by
reading books that will help develop reading skills, have
thought-provoking content, but are written for young people in
the middle school age group. We have developed some lists of
recommended books for each grade level that meet these
objectives. We call them Books of Substance. Please follow the
links below to see a list of recommended books for each of our
grades that are quality reads and age-appropriate.
Students with exceptional reading abilities should challenge
themselves with our Honors Certification List. These
books are classics of the English language, and well-educated
young adults should become familiar with as many as possible. All of them are testable in the AR® program. To earn Honors
Certification, a student must earn 100 quiz points.
