Boat Engineering Challenge
Background/Problem: You are to design an electric powered speed boat. Your goal is to design the fastest boat possible using only the materials provided. Remember to follow the Engineering Design Process of:
- Identify your problem (See background/problem aboce)
- Research ideas CLICK HERE
- Select the Best Idea (3 sketches of diffrent designs)
- Test the idea (Build your boat)
- Evaluate your results (Improve your boat)
Before you gather your materials do 3 sketches and show them to SILVIS/AMATO
NOTE: You must use the copper colored pins to 'pin' your boat together BEFORE you glue it together. You will need to design a boat that is NEAT and put together according to a plan. You will be graded as follows:
- 5 pts for solving the problem as described as above.
- 5 pts for quality of your boat.
Materials:
- 2 styro. blocks WHITE 4" X 8"
- 1 piece of 1"X1" blue styro.
- 1 Blue rubber band
- 1 D.C. electic motor
- 1 AA battery pack
- Propeller of choice
- 1 balloon
- White glue
- Hot wire cutter.
IF you want to extend the shaft of your motor you may use the follwing materials:
- Wire
- Brazing rod
- Hot glue
Steps for completion
- Sketch 3 ideas with your partner CLICK HERE FOR GRAPH PAPER
- Gather your materials
- Cut your materials with the hot wire cutter
- Sand your boat hull
Gliders
Open and print the glider design and fabrication information
Trebuchets
- Print a copy of the Trebuchet Introduction. (Print to the phaser printer)
- Open the Trebuchet building instructions and complete the trebuchet introduction
- Print the Trebuchet pattern
- Begin following the Trebuchet building instructions to fabricarte your trebuchet
- After you complete the fabrication of your trebuchet, use 5 mass plates and engineer your trebuchet to throw a 2 gram clay ball as far as possible.
- Print the Trebuchet Data Sheet and record the necessary information
- When finished play the TREB CHALLENGE
Pneumatic Racer Finishing instrutions:
- Sand with 80 grit
- Sand with 150 grit
- Sand with 220 grit
- Clean your blank with a damp paper towel.
- Apply sanding sealer
- Sand with 220
- Apply primer
- Sand with 220
- Paint & Add decals

Week 2
Career Investigation
1. Go the the Skill Search and click everything that strongly applies to yourslef, then click GO to get a list of possible jobs for you.
2. Choose a job that you are interestd in, and design a powerpoint presentation with the following information in it:
- Your Name & Job Title
- Job Description (what you wil do)
- Preparation (college, on the job, etc;)
- Wages
- Education (where to get a degree, or certification)
- Knowledge (what knowledge do you need)
- Related Occupations
To open Powerpoint on the Mac Computers:
- Click on the Hard drive on the desktop
- Go into APPLICATIONS
- Open Microsoft Office X
- Open Powerpoint.
- Save to your student folder.
Please find some images/graphics to include in your powerpoint.
You have 2 days to complete this task.
Week 1
1. Your task is to score 2000 points on the ruler game. You must be on the 1/16ths level with the timer turned on. Once you score 2000 points, have Mr.Amato or Mr.Silvis sign your sign-off page.
2. Your second task is to download and print the measurement sheet and use a ruler to complete the worksheet. Please type your name into it before you print. Print to the Phaser printer.
