Milepost Program
My child does not participate in
special education. How does Blaine County School District
meet my child’s individual needs?
Blaine County School District currently uses a tiered system of
accommodations
and interventions to meet the needs of
individual students. The purpose of this system is to increase
student achievement through meaningful educational programming.
A variety of accommodations and interventions are
implemented and adjusted to help students gain progress.
Teachers use frequent assessments to monitor progress.
Blaine County School District has divided student accommodations
and interventions into four “tiers” according to intensity.
These tiers build upon each other.
Teachers chose tier accommodations and interventions
based on individual student needs.

Description
|
These
accommodations
typically occur in the general
education classroom.
Accommodations are designed by teachers to make
the curriculum more accessible for students. By using
these accommodations, classroom teachers have the
potential for increased academic performance.
|
These interventions typically occur in the general
education classroom.
They are designed as preventative and proactive
measures.
The focus of this tier is early intervention for a
student who is “at risk” for learning or behavioral
difficulties.
|
These interventions may occur inside or outside of the
general education classroom.
They are designed for students who need small
group instruction. Students who participate in tier 2
interventions are monitored frequently with data
collection by BCSD staff.
|
These interventions are designed for students in need of
intensive instruction, in order to make academic or
behavioral progress.
Tier 3 interventions generally utilize
“replacement” instruction to target student needs.
Frequent monitoring and data collection occur at
this level.

How does the district know if an intervention/tier is working?
Educators
frequently monitor student progress.
Within Blaine
County School District, student progress is
tracked using the “Milepost Program”.
Milepost plans are written for students who need
strategic interventions in order to demonstrate success at
school.
Within
a plan, goals are set for students in their area(s) of need.
Interventions and
accommodations are implemented, which
should assist students in meeting their academic goals.
Plans are available for students in the areas of reading,
writing, mathematics, and behavior. A Milepost Plan is updated
at least once per year and typically flows from one year to the
next, until it is deemed unnecessary for a student.
Plans are flexible and can be modified as needed.

If
it is found through data collection that a student is not
progressing at an appropriate rate, the teacher will adjust
accommodations/interventions accordingly.
Students who do not show progress may be brought to the
“building support team” or BST for possible next
steps.
