BES Welcomes the New Year!
Happy New Year
Our Bellevue Bears returned to school Tuesday, January 3rd, after a "balmy" winter break. This year BES students are missing the wonderful sledding hills Bellevue Elementary is known for during active recess times because of the lack of snow! Instead, we have patches of ice and have asked our students to be very careful, while gliding over them. We wish you all have a happy and healthy new year in 2012. We have several upcoming events you will want to schedule on your calendar.
On Friday, January 13th, students will get an early start to a 3 day weekend. All Blaine County schools will dismiss 2 hours early for staff collaboration day. There will be no afternoon preschool on Friday. In addition, there will be no school on Monday, January 16th in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. School will resume Tuesday, January 17th, at regularly scheduled times.
On Thursday, January 19th for 6:30 to 7:30 all Bellevue Elementary students and their parents are invited to our BES Family Math Night. It is an evening of math puzzles, games, brain teasers appropriate for all ages! All children must be accompanied by an adult and all adults must be accompanied by a child! We hope to see you there!
The new math curriculum continues to be a focus for our BES students. When your child leaves school, the learning doesn't have to end. Try these suggestion for fitting math skills into everyday activities.
- Appoint your child to be scorekeeper for family games. He can practice "math in his head" by adding up points for Yahtzee, Scrabble, or Hearts.
- At the grocery store, ask your youngster to estimate 2 lb. of green beans or 3 lb of potatoes. Then, let him check the weights on the produce scale.
- How much space does he need for a jigsaw puzzle? Have him look at the dimensions on the box ( say, 18" X 24") and use a ruler or yardstick to find a spot that's at least 18" wide and 24" long.
- How long will it take to fold a load of laundry or drive to the bank? Suggest that he write down his estimate and then time the task on a cell phone or car clock.
- When you bake, put your youngster in charge of measuring ingredients ( 1 cup milk, 1/2 tsp.. salt) and finding the right sized pan (11" X 7", 13" X 9")
Math activities such as these, help provide a wide variety of mathematical concepts in our daily lives and make math meaningful!

Bear Hugs
Bellevue Elementary School's Bear Hugs Project
A dored Bellevue Elementary School librarian, Norma Yager, facilitates the Bear Hugs Project during the holidays. What is the Bear Hugs Project? Each December, the Bellevue Bears donate stuffed bears that can be hugged by emergency victims and their families. Students name the bears, tag them with a caring message, and then donate them to emergency personnel during a Bear Hugs assembly each December. The Bellevue Marshal and Wood River Fire and Rescue team accept the gifted bears and put them in their emergency vehicles. These teddy bears are then accessible for emergency personnel to give to children and adults who are in a traumatic situation and need something to give them a little comfort. Approximately 50 stuffed bears are given to our community helpers each season. Nearly 200 bears have been shared in our community over the life of this project. The cuddly bears provide comfort to those in need of a hug during a time of crisis. Special thanks to the students and staff of Bellevue Elementary for this Bear Hug gift each holiday. It provides tender loving care in our valley that is available throughout the year.

Tree Decorating at Zion's Bank
4th Graders Spread Holiday Cheer!
On Thursday, December 8th, the fourth grade students from Bellevue Elementary School went to the Zion Bank in Hailey. They decorated the tree with ornaments made by our students: a paper chain made by the Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students; North Pole signs made by Third Graders, Clothespin and Stick Ornaments made by Fourth Graders, and recycled Christmas cards by Fifth Graders. We sang Christmas songs, had hot cocoa and cookies, and received gift bags. The bank donated $200 to the Art Program at Bellevue Elementary School. This was our sixth year for this community/school partnership. Thank you to Zion Bank and its 41st annual Lights On Tree Trimming tradition!

Cub Council News
Cub Council Community Service Visit the Hunger Coalition
Our 5th grade leadership group, the Cub Council, under the direction of Krista Jones, led a school-wide food drive for the Hunger Coalition. Bellevue students and staff were very generous with providing food for the less fortunate in our community. Over 1,000 pounds of food was collected! This week, the Cub Council went back to work for the Hunger Coalition in the warehouse, packing almost 750 pounds of pinto beans!
Another fun note....BES Cub Council just received a letter and drawings from the little African boy from Mozambique--who was "adopted" with Cub Council's money they raised from a Save the Children / Japanese Tsunami bake sale. With help from Mrs. Leslie, students will send letters back. We can now have 2-way communication with little Alfredo & his village!
Both of these projects give ALL of our BES kids a perspective of how lucky we are for what we already have and how we can help others in our local and global community.

We are the Bellevue Bears...
Welcome to the electronic home of the Bellevue Bears! I am your
principal, Angie Martinez.
Our caring staff of
50 talented staff members currently serves approximately 300
students between Preschool and 5th grade. We also house the
District’s Kindergarten and First Grade Dual Immersion Program
and provide on-site childcare through Kid Shop.
In addition to a comprehensive academic curriculum, our
students are offered specialized instruction in music, art,
integrated science and technology, physical education, and
computers. A complete Student Services Department provides
specialized instruction to students with academic challenges.
We provide students with advanced learning enrichment
opportunities, and a variety of other enhancement offerings such
as Chess Club, After School Program, Honor Choir, Orchestra, Ski
Program, and the Radio Program. We take pride in Bellevue
Elementary! It is a thoughtful and caring place: We care
for others and respect the opportunity to learn.
BES rocks!
We sport red, black and gold as our school colors. Homer Junior is our mascot and traveling companion. He takes many fabulous trips across the country with our students. We acknowledge neighborly behavior in developing strong character through Beary Good Neighbor Notes and our community service projects.
We welcome our parents to our school and extend our invitation to you!
