Students in 1st and 2nd grades may be selected to participate in literature or math challenge groups. Selection is based on the classroom teachers' recommendations and on standarized achievement test scores.

Literature groups for 1st graders expose students to challenging reading selections, examine elements of literature, and promote higher level thinking skills.

Math groups for 1st and 2nd graders offer lessons on a variety of topics, including critical thinking, creative problem solving, data analysis, probability, geometry, and an introduction to chess.
