When To Stop for a School Bus
The district would like to take a moment to remind drivers when they need to stop for school buses that are either loading or unloading students.
Anytime that you are around a school bus and the yellow lights are flashing, the bus is preparing to stop to let students on or off the bus. The question is what do you need to do?
Most places in Blaine County are three lanes or less. This could be one lane in each direction plus a center turn lane. When the red lights are activated and the stop sign extends from the side of the bus, all traffic needs to be stopped. Remain stopped until the red lights and stop sign are turned off and then you may continue on your way.
In areas with four or more lanes of traffic, only the traffic going the same direction as the bus is required to stop. For example: along the highway, the southbound traffic is not required to stop for a northbound bus loading or unloading students. Only the traffic going the same direction as the bus must stop. Traffic may continue after the red lights and stop sign have been cancelled.
Anytime you are in the area of a school bus, please watch for students. Our students don't always watch for traffic. Let's all make an extra effort to watch for them and help keep our kids safe.
