Ms. Ervin

Hi - I'm Betty Ervin, the Art Teacher and Fine Arts Department Head at WRHS. I've been teaching art for the past 29 years. I taught 9 years at a private school in Las Vegas, where I worked with middle school and high school students. Our family moved to Hailey, Idaho in 2000. The first year I was in the valley I taught elementary art at The Community School.

I've been teaching at Wood River since 2001; I love teaching high school students - they are my favorite age group to work with! At WRHS I teach a variety of drawing and painting classes, as well as PreAP and AP Studio Art, plus I am the advisor for Art Club, which was on pause due to covid, but will begin again in 2021/22 school year.

I grew up in Hawaii, moving there when I was in 3rd grade with my parents and siblings. I lived in Hawaii for 18 years. There I earned my BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii). I moved to L.A. in 1984 where I attended Otis Art Institute, and earned my Master of Fine Art in 1986. Upon graduation, I rented a loft studio in downtown L.A. and had gallery representation at The Works Gallery in Long Beach. I met my husband while working at the Biltmore Hotel. Long story short, we married and moved to Las Vegas. I returned to school at UNLV to attain my teaching certification. My husband and I have two children, a daughter and son. Our daughter, Rian is now 32 living and working in Napa, California. My son, Bryce is 29, he is the Associate Dean of Admissions at Bowdoin College in Maine.

I love being outdoors, gardening, hiking, walking my dog etc... I enjoy camping and I love cooking. My passion, however is art, I love making things, brainstorming, coming up with visual ideas/challenges for myself and my students. I love my job, helping students create works of art. The best way I've found to describe my job is: "teaching art defines me and who I am".  And without art all we would have is nature.

I look forward to meeting you sometime throughout the school year.
