Young people inspire me daily! Together, the students and I collaborate to create an engaging and active learning environment. The goal is that the classroom culture is a comfortable place to enhance our reading strategies and writing skills. It's a safe place to show strengths, learn from mistakes, and help each other grow socially and academically. Best practices for all learners, including me, are to work hard, be prepared, and be proud of achievements (one's own as well as the rest of the group/s). When I'm not in the classroom or reading my students' works, I love to watch movies, play word games, take road trips with my family, bake, and, of course, read great books! It is always a pleasure to work with my partner and great teacher, Tim Rierden. We are working on co-authoring our second book together right now. Teaching is my vocation, and this is my 31st year of teaching. It is amazing how much I have learned since earning my Master's of Education in 1991.

One important factor in helping students succeed is having a support team for the students, and one of the most important roles in the team is parental involvement. This year, we will guide our students together. As parents, families, and mentors, you are a very important part of our team. Please help keep your 6th grader on track. ----- So, how do you do that?
✔️First, you are already on track as you are here reading about our English classroom. Other ideas:
✔️Your student will definitely benefit and is expected to read at home, for 20 minutes per day; it would be so beneficial to have him/her read aloud to you and/or with you, at least two times a week.
✔️Ask your child about his/her day (the high points, any homework, what book he/she is reading, etc.).
✔️Have your child communicate and share our Google Classroom. -
-All students are expected to check into Google Classroom daily.
-If students are absent, Google Classroom is a must! -When a student is absent, it is very important for him/her to check in and keep up with the class.
-FYI - check into Skyward too (Skyward is where grades for English are posted, and Google is where assignments are pushed out and/or posted).
✔️Finally, your student will have English-based homework every night::
-Reading an average of 20 minutes per night
- Completing a Whooo's Reading Question/Week -Always restate the question in your answer!
-Complete 20 minutes of IXL at home, once per week.
-Check into Whooo's Reading Goals and complete your monthly goals
