Wood River High School Announces National Merit Scholar
Wood River High School (WRHS) is pleased to announce a 2018 National Merit Scholarship Award winner. Mason Johnson, WRHS Senior, has been selected from more than 1.6 million Juniors who took the 2016 PSAT, which serves as a screener for this program’s scholarships. While more than 15,000 students were selected through this screening process, only 7,500 students hold the title of National Merit Scholar. Finalists are selected through a rigorous process that includes the review of the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
WRHS Principal John Pearce wrote, “Mason has truly earned this prestigious title. Mason has been selected as the 2018 WRHS Valedictorian, having obtained a 4.35 weighted GPA. After graduation, Mason will put his challenging and rigorous coursework to good use as he plans to attend Cal Poly in the fall in pursuit of biomedical engineering. Not only a scholar, Mason has accumulated 130 hours of community service. With the prestigious title of National Merit Scholar, Mason has earned a scholarship award of $2,500, which may be applied to his continuing education.”
