Staff Learn How to Stop the Bleed
Due to a generous grant from the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, Shelly Warmack, MSN, RN, CEN, Trauma Program Manager for St. Luke’s Wood River, partnered with Wood River Middle School Resource Officer Brad Gelskey and Principal Fritz Peters to offer “Stop the Bleed” training and supplies to Blaine County School District principals and district leaders.
According to St. Luke’s, the goal is to empower the public to make a difference in a life-threatening emergency by teaching them the basic techniques of bleeding control. The Stop the Bleed program is a call to action, much like CPR is, to encourage individuals to become trained, equipped and emboldened to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help can reach the injured. A person can die from blood loss in less than five minutes, making it critical to stop or slow the bleeding as quickly as possible.
Carey School students in grades 7 and 8 have been trained to Stop the Bleed. Wood River Middle School is offering training to staff on an ongoing basis. Organizations and businesses who are interested in learning more or in scheduling a training can contact Joy Prudek, St. Luke’s Wood River Public Relations, at prudekv@slhs.org, (208) 727-8435. Blaine County School District will continue to provide training to staff in the future.
