Students Sweep the Competition
Wood River Middle School and High School Choir teacher Max Stimac wrote that the Wood River High School Music Department traveled to Anaheim, California to compete in the Worldstrides Onstage Heritage Music Festival Competition in March.
He wrote, “Over 1,200 students from around the United States participated in this competition. 162 students and chaperones made the trip on three busses. Competing in the festival were; Spiritus Mixed Choir and Colla Voce Women’s Jazz Choir, directed by Max Stimac. B-Tones Men’s Choir, directed by R. L. Rowsey. Chamber Orchestra directed by Rebecca Martin. Concert Orchestra, directed by Rebecca Martin and Ellen Sanders. Dixie Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band directed by Tony Randall. The students spent Friday Morning and afternoon Competing at the festival then enjoyed themselves at Disneyland Friday evening and all day Saturday. On Saturday evening, the student attended the festival Awards ceremony held in Disney’s Fantasyland Theater.
Wood River High School awards received in their respective divisions include:
- Colla Voce Women’s Jazz Choir – Gold 1st place
- B-Tones Men’s Choir – Gold 1st place
- Spiritus Mixed Choir – Gold 2nd place
- Chamber Orchestra – Gold 1st place, Adjudicators Trophy for excellence
- Concert Orchestra – Gold 1st place
- Dixie Band – Silver 1st place
- Jazz Band – Silver 2nd place
- Concert Band – Bronze 3rd place
- Lance Verst – Maestro Award for Cello Solo
- Emma Flolo – Disney’s You Make the Magic Award for outstanding community service and dedication to the music program.
And finally, the last and biggest award to be at the festival is the coveted Festival Sweepstakes Award. This award is given to the school with the highest combined scores of the choir and instrumental groups from each competing schools. Wood River High School Music Department was very proud to accept this award.”
Superintendent Dr. GwenCarol Holmes wrote in an email to the music teachers, “Excellent job! Congratulations. Even more impressive is the consistency of excellence by these programs year after year - a testament to the incredible music opportunities provided to our students by this community. Thank you everyone.”
