Cool Ride
The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office began a new Community Policing Program involving our local school children. “Ride to School with the Sheriff” continues the goal of the Blaine County Sheriff’s other community policing programs by creating positive police interactions with young students. “We want them to know law enforcement is a friend and is always here to help keep them safe,” said Sheriff Steve M. Harkins.
Elementary students can be selected for any reason to participate by the schools’ teachers and administration. Once selected Sheriff Harkins will arrive at the student’s home prior to school, meet with their parents, and then give the student a safe ride to their school.
This morning the first student to get this special ride to school was Natalie Zaragoza, a 5th grader in Ms. Barsotti’s class at Hailey Elementary School. “Natalie is a Star Student, who is a positive role model to her classmates, and often helps other students when in need. She is very kind, and really sets a great example of a Star Student,” said Hailey Elementary Principal Thad Biggers.
“How cool is it when a marked patrol comes to your house, picks you up, and takes you to school for all your classmates to see?” said Harkins. “We really want this to be a positive experience for the students and it gives them a chance to meet our local sheriff’s deputies. I feel it is important we start these relationships early on and build trust with our future citizens.”
Natalie also received a special certificate.
