Science at Wood River Middle School
Wood River Middle School kicked off the Teacher for the Day program in the 7th grade science classrooms with a science presentation from Dr. Hess, DVM. Dr. Hess is a local veterinarian who specializes in dairy cattle and is Lila Hess’ dad. 280 students learned about what types of skills and education it takes to become a veterinarian and were introduced to the development of a calf from conception to birth. Students from Mrs. Clark, Mr. Gardner and Miss Dredge’s life science classrooms were introduced to body systems and individual organs and their functions by viewing and touching prepared specimens from a calf necropsy. Dr. Hess’ best advice to students wanting to prepare for a medical field was to read, read, read, every day and to excel in math and science classes at the middle school level. When it comes time to take those standardized tests, like the ACT or SAT, get a practice book and become very familiar with the test before you have to take it at the testing center and your score counts. Science classes are continuing to explore the ideas of development by raising trout from eggs with the Trout in the Classroom project and also hatching chicken and duck eggs with our new incubator sponsored through a Donors Choose grant. Thank you to all the parents who have contributed to the success of our science classrooms this year, and thank you to Dr. Hess for being such a great teacher.
