School Calendar Changes
The Board of Trustees will discuss changes to the school calendar as a result of the recent negotiations with the Blaine County Education Association. Part of the negotiated agreement with the Blaine County Education Association resulted in two days of professional development being moved from the week of Thanksgiving to another time in the school calendar that will be determined by the Board of Trustees. The changes in the school calendar will impact both parents, students, staff and graduation dates for all three high schools in 2018.
Based on input from school principals and staff (as available during the summer recess), the three school calendar options that fit with the Calendar Committee's original recommendations for the Board of Trustees consideration are:
1) Designate January 2 and 3 as professional development days and add two instructional days to the calendar on June 6 and 7, moving the Teacher Work Day to June 8. This change would also mean that Carey graduation would need to move to June 1 and WRHS and SCHS graduation would move to either Thursday June 7 or Friday June 8 (whichever day is better for WRHS and SCHS families and staff) in order to ensure the required instructional time for seniors. Note: Staff who work 246-260 days a year would still be required to work November 20 and 21.
2) Designate January 2 and 3 as professional development days and add two instructional days to the calendar by eliminating the January 15 Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and the February 19 Presidents Day holiday so that these are both instructional days. This would not impact the currently scheduled graduation dates for Carey High School, WRHS, and SCHS. Note: Year round staff would work January 15 and February 19 as well and not be required to work November 20 and 21. In addition, many winter sport events are traditionally schedule on the holiday weekends on the assumption that students are out of school.
3) Designate January 2 and 3 as professional development days. Designate December 18 and 19 as student and teacher attendance days. This would not impact the currently scheduled graduation dates for Carey High School, WRHS, and SCHS. This would create a two-day week which would most likely impact attendance. Note: Staff who work 246-260 days a year would work December 18 and 19 as well and not be required to work November 20 and 21.
