SUPERINTENDENT'S LETTER TO STAFF, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY
May 21, 2018
Dear Parents and Colleagues,
Once again the emotions and fears of another horrific school shooting must be addressed. It is becoming a way of life. A way of life that I am not willing to accept and I trust our community is not either. The young student in Santa Fe, Texas that expressed no surprise that it happened in her school gives me great pause.
We have multiple security structures in place. We have locked doors, cameras, School Resource Officers and regular drills of security procedures. We actively teach social emotional learning and we have social workers and a Mental Health Therapist that work alongside our teachers and administrators in an effort to ensure our students are supported academically and emotionally.
I can also tell you that we have students who are sensitive to their peers and when they see a fellow student struggling either in person or on social media, they alert their teachers so that adult intervention can be immediate. Our staff take every concern seriously and work to ensure students are receiving the support they need.
As a community we need to band together to say we are here for our youth. We must be vigilant in ensuring all of our children know how precious they are to us. They must know that we are here for them in the good times and hard times and that there is never a time so desperate that we cannot help. When we see our children engaging in behavior that can be harmful to themselves or others, we need the courage to step forward and tell them that behavior is not okay and we will help them move to healthy behavior. Do not look the other way when you see a child in trouble. We must create a culture that is built on acceptance, caring, and kindness, even when we have differences.
I encourage each one of us to take time to listen to and speak with every one of our children. They need to know we are there for them. This community is rich in the resources it provides for our children. Let us be rich in giving our children our undivided attention as we listen and speak to them about their hopes, dreams, and fears.
With gratitude,
GwenCarol Holmes, Ed.D.
Superintendent
