STUDENTS EXCEL AT INVENT IDAHO
Students representing three schools in Blaine County participated in the Southwest Regional Invent Idaho competition in Boise on January 26.
According to its website, Invent Idaho is the premier student invention program in the Northwest, providing a forum for thousands of young inventors in grades one through eight since its inception in 1989. Invent Idaho celebrates student creativity and innovation while teaching the inventive thinking process in an interdisciplinary curriculum. Young inventors participate in progressive levels of competitions, including three Regional events held across Idaho, culminating in an Invent Idaho State Finals event.
After studying the history and process of invention, students in Gifted and Talented classes in grades 1-6 at Bellevue Elementary, Hailey Elementary and Ernest Hemingway STEAM School used their creativity and ingenuity to develop inventions of their own by brainstorming solutions to multiple problems.
Adena Garrison, Jackson Harper and Audrey Smith represented Bellevue Elementary. Elli Siegel, Jack Daly, George Heath, Rowan Star, Shayne Burrell, Tessa Peck, Anna Gilman, Hayden Barbre, Miles McMinn and William Cone represented Hailey Elementary. Cora Fankhanel, JackHenry Kelso, Thijs Lloyd, Jed Copenbarger, Bianca Smith, Angel Guzman-Mendoza, Mauricio McCann, Dalton Sampson, Issy Rossellini, Hayden Gvozdas, Jacob Choma, Parker Seaman, Kahrs Bemis, Oscar Mullen, Addie Parmenter, Carson Bauer, and Rya Nichols represented Ernest Hemingway STEAM School.
Award-winners from Hailey Elementary were:
- Hayden Barbre, Best of the Show Award for grades 5-8, KELP (Kelp Electromagnetic Life Protector) invention, a space travel suit that absorbs harmful radiation.
- Miles McMinn, 2nd Place, High Ball invention, combining the game of soccer with a trampoline component.
- William Cone, 2nd place, Super Safe Box Cutter invention, with a blade that automatically retracts when not in use.
- George Heath and Rowan Star worked as a team to produce their L.E.T. (Light Entertainment Turf), an improvement on AstroTurf that lights up on the field play by play.
Award-winners from Ernest Hemingway STEAM School were:
- Addie Parmenter, Best of Category - Non-Working Models, Aqua Orb invention, a water carrying/purifying ball eliminating the need to carry water on one’s head in countries where potable water is not readily available.
- Rya Nichols, 1st Place, 5-6 Jules Verne, Elephant Protection System to help stop poaching.
- Hayden Gvozdas/Jacob Choma, 1st Place, 3-4 Games, Hit Kick Shoot Stickhandle Math game incorporating sports facts in math problems.
- Dalton Sampson, 1st Place, 3-4 Working Model, Happy Strappy invention replacing bike helmet straps with rubber tubing and magnets.
- JackHenry Kelso, 1st Place, 1-2 Jules Verne, Brain Steps invention using a recorder and brain waves to allow task requests to filter through brain one at a time.
- Mauricio McCann, 2nd Place, 3-4 Jules Verne, Task Attacker invention using an EEG and brain thoughts to control vest with 3 pairs of arms to allow multi-tasking.
- Angel Guzman-Mendoza, 3rd Place, 3-4 Jules Verne, Pollute No More invention of a plastic eating/digesting fish.
- Cora Fankhanel, 3rd Place, 1-2 Adaptations, Protect-A-Box invention using fingerprint recognition/camera/bluetooth tech to alert the owner of unwanted access to stored items.
Students who won awards at the Southwest Regional Competition qualified for the Invent Idaho State Finals in Moscow, Idaho on March 1st.
