HANDS-ON LEARNING FOR HAILEY ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
5th-grade students at Hailey Elementary read Attack of the Turtle, a book of historical fiction about the creation of the first submarine used in the Revolutionary War. Jenica Alexander, a 5th-grade teacher, said that students built their own submarines out of pop bottles and eventually tested them in the pool at Sun Valley Resort.
Lieutenant Commander (Ret.) Richard Fife, a former Naval Operations Officer with Submarine Squadron 17, visited the classes before the submarine test. He spoke about the main character in Attack of the Turtle and similar experiences he had with overcoming fear and life on a submarine. He also helped students test their designs in the classroom before the full test at Sun Valley Resort’s pool.
Alexander said, “It was a fantastic project and the students were highly engaged with all the aspects of the project, from reading the book to meeting Mr. Fife.” Special thanks to the 5th-grade team at HES, Lieutenant Commander (Ret.) Richard Fife and Sun Valley Resort.
