Students Get Brainy
Students at Bellevue Elementary dissected a deer brain in order to learn how the brain works, how the brain learns and how to keep a healthy brain. Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) teacher Elizabeth Sturges wrote, “This year's GATE curriculum focuses on making and creating connections across the curriculum, within ourselves and across the world. We started the year learning all about our brains and how neural pathways make connections in our brains that create learning! Through research, we learned about how the brain works, how the brain learns and how to keep a healthy brain. In order for my students to get a deeper understanding I wanted them to get up close and personal with a brain! Thanks to one of my students' parents, we were able to find a fresh deer brain to dissect! With the help of St. Luke’s, who provided the safety gear, we slowly cut away the brainstem and cerebellum and then divided it into the two different hemispheres. Each child was then given a cross section of brain to look at and dissect. Next week, we are looking at some of the brain matter under the microscope to see those connections a little more closely.”
