Re: Student Voter Registration
Dear Students:
I am a supporter of the voter registration initiative under Mayors for Our Lives. That is a non-partisan effort to encourage young people to register to vote and take part in their governmental processes. Millennials are. now as large of a political force as Baby Boomers, according to an analysis of U.S. census data from the Pew Research Center reported on NPR.
You are part of the largest generation in American history, but, according to an article I read in the Atlantic, young people don't use their voting power.
Between 1964 and 2012, youth voter turnout in presidential elections has fallen below 50 percent, and Baby Boomers now outvote their children's generation by a stunning 30 percentage points. Millennials might make a lot of noise between presidential elections, but in November, politicians remember what you people are: All throat and no vote. The Liberal Millennial Revolution, The Atlantic, 02/2016
I want to encourage all students who will be 18 years of age by election day and are otherwise eligible to register to vote. We intend to make registering easier for you in several ways:
- National Voter Registration Day is on Tuesday, September 25, 2018. You may register to vote on that day at the Hailey Public Library. The friendly library staff and volunteers will help you to register.
- You may register to vote at Hailey City Hall at any time between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. until the end of September. The staff at the front windows can help you register with no lines.
- Traditionally, people register to vote at the Blaine County Elections office. That option is, available to you as well.
Consider your part in the national, state, and local conversations that surround votes.
When registered, you can vote in candidate elections and measures that deal with the quality of your towns and the taxes you pay. I hope to see all eligible students become registered to vote.
Sincerely,
Fritz X. Haemmerle
Mayor, City of Hailey
