Students Take a Stand at Model UN
By Joel Zellers, Wood River High School
The Wood River Model United Nations Club traveled to Jackson High School to complete in the Teton County Model United Nations Conference. The conference started with a political discussion hosted by TCMUN and keynote speaker, Dr. James Scott (Texas Christian University). The next day our students spent eight hours discussing current UN issues ranging from Terrorism in the Horn of Africa to Combating Violence against Women Migrant Workers. On Tuesday, delegates began writing resolutions to solve these humanitarian issues.
After two days of serious diplomacy, WRHS MUN members were able to pass resolutions in committee and vote in the UN General Assembly. With over 200 students participating in this event, WR faced some seriously tough and driven delegates. With a total of seven committees and 14 awards, WR earned six awards: Isaac Loomis earned top honors as Best Delegate in the Human Rights Council while representing Iraq (not an easy country to defend when talking about human rights), Kaia Jensen earned Best Delegate in the World Health Organization as a delegate from Peru. Jake Simon, representing the UK, won Honorable Mention in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Tia Vonter, representing Peru earned Honorable Mention in the Commission of the Status of Women. Clara Harding represented the UK and won Honorable Mention in the Human Rights Commission. Zoe Simon earned Best Position Paper while representing the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Human Rights Commission.
