Shadows and the Earth’s Movement

Students working with shadows By Pat Barto, Hemingway STEAM School

Students at Hemingway STEAM School studied shadows recently as part of their science curriculum. The 5th grade students began by making shadow puppets out of tinfoil and then went on to trace their own shadows in the school parking lot.  Students did a tracing in the morning and then after lunch to see how the shadows changed and evolved over time. The students are learning about the movement of the Earth in relation to the sun, and what this has to do with the lengthening and shortening of their shadows.
