The purpose of administering medications in school is to help each child maintain an optimal state of health that may enhance his/her educational plan. Ideally, all medication should be given at home. However, there are students who will need to be given medications during the school day daily or for a longer period. Other Health Concerns-
School Health Plans should be completed with the Primary Care Physician, Parent, and School Nurse. If you suspect your child’s health condition is a disability that could substantially limit their learning or another major life activity, you may request a meeting with the school to evaluate if additional services or accommodations are needed. Please contact the school nurse to request this evaluation. In some circumstances, the School Health Plan may be part of your child's 504 Plan.
-
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) is a Federal civil rights law that is designed to eliminate disability discrimination in programs and activities. A Section 504 Plan enables the school to offer accommodations and other support to assist your student while at school and during school related activities. A 504 Plan is an option for parents and their child, it is not mandatory. The enclosed parent and student rights may answer some of your questions about Section 504. Please contact your school nurse with questions or if you want to make a parent referral to the 504 team. The staff at your school may also make a referral to the 504 team if they have concerns regarding your student. You may also contact your school nurse if you would like a copy of your child’s health plan that is already in place.
