In Blaine County School District, our Dual Immersion program includes grades K-12. Students who enter dual immersion in Kindergarten will have the opportunity to continue developing their language in both Spanish and English through graduation. Below is more explanation of the specifics for each level.
Elementary
In grades K-5, classes consist of approximately twenty students. As ours is a two-way immersion program, we try to maintain a balance in the numbers of native English speaking students and native Spanish speaking students. Students act as language models for each other, as they are engaged in learning and instruction that is delivered roughly half the time in English and about half in Spanish. Therefore, every student has the experience of learning in their native language and learning in a second language.
Alturas Elementary, the district elementary Dual Immersion magnet school, uses the 50:50 model for instruction. All students have half their day taught in English and half their day taught in Spanish. Students have English Language Arts and Spanish Language Arts every day. Through an immersion structure students engage in their math, science, health, and social studies in either Spanish or English for an entire year depending on grade level. See the Alturas Elementary website to learn more about their program.
Secondary
At the secondary level, grades 6-12, Dual Immersion students have the opportunity to place into a Spanish as a World Language course that aligns with their proficiency level. Spanish language courses offered at the high school level include AP Spanish Language that may earn college credit. Dual Immersion students are also required to have Spanish humanities courses and a certain number of electives conducted in Spanish to be recognized as a DI completer at graduation. Please see the Wood River High School Planning Guide for more information on DI requirements for high school students.
