Mr. Zellers

Welcome to the website of Joel Zellers. The goal of this site is to inform parents and students of the classes I teach at Wood River High School. I have been in the field of teaching for the past 20 years and have coached for the same amount. My teaching assignments have varied and currently I am teaching in the areas of Special Education, Senior Project and AP Psychology. I earned my BA in psychology from San Diego State University and continued on at Boise State University to earn my teaching credentials in psychology and special education. Between these two universities, I volunteered as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, West Africa. My experiences in Africa naturally led me to work with Amnesty International and Model United Nations upon my return. At WRHS I advise an Amnesty International group which strives towards human rights for all by leading delegations to conferences, writing 100s of letters to prisoners of conscience and hosting the Lights of Life Human Rights gathering. The Model United Nations Club at Wood River High School has given students the opportunity to become global citizens while participating as delegates from Member(UN)Nations. The WRHS MUN club is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about global issues and resolve those issues in stimulating environments.

During the Fall of 2016, WRHS embarked on a new direction in sports - mountain bike racing. The National Interscholastic Cycling Association's Inaugural year was exceptionally successful for WRHS. We paced 3rd overall in the state with two State Champions. I am the proud director of this program and am excited to see it grow into one of the most inclusive and progressive sports in Idaho.

Along with my academic pursuits, I continue to be active as a cyclist, runner, skier/snowboarder, explorer and surfer. During the summer months I enjoy traveling with my family - the best trips are those to Baja where we explore those rare, untouched surf spots that few dare to go to.
