Welcome to 5th Grade!
Welcome to Ernest Hemingway STEAM School and the wonderful world of 5th grade! Our names are Laura Barnhardt, Brad Stansberry, and Mya Parsons. Our teaching team is dedicated to providing each child with opportunities to progress academically, emotionally, and socially.
In 5th grade, we work to integrate our curriculum in math, reading, writing, social studies, science, health and social emotional standards through STEAM. We are excited to provide our students with hands-on experiences while answering real world questions.
In science, we focus on mixtures and solutions, the earth and sun, and living systems. In social studies, we study U.S. history, studying early explorers, the colonies, and the Revolutionary War. Our students learn and use a variety of map skills, with a focus on the United States. States and capitals are memorized, followed by a U.S. map project where land features, cities, and resources are creatively presented.
This will be a challenging and maturing year for your children. We strongly encourage our students to accept responsibility for their learning, develop greater independence, and maintain high quality work. The Fifth Grade at Hemingway provides a solid foundation for a successful transition into middle school. Not only will we expect our students to do his/her part, but also as their support team, parents and teachers, we are dedicated to helping them meet their goals to ensure success.
In addition to our regular curriculum, our students attend "Specials" daily. These include Music, Art, P.E., library and Engineering and Design. Technology is integrated daily through lessons. Our 5th graders also participate in putting together the daily news shows, called HTV. Once a week, a team puts together a weekly show that includes clips from around the school and interviews with various people.
We are excited about the year ahead and hope that you are too. Please feel free to contact us via email, phone, or letter if you have any questions.
