Welcome to Second Grade!
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
Our Second Grade team has three dedicated and dynamic teachers with 70 years of combined education experience. We value communication between students, parents, and teachers and adhere to the state standards while ensuring that our instruction is dynamic and STEAM-focused. We believe in a full partnership between school and home. As a team we work together, integrating curriculum to provide a well balanced education to foster the growth of each student.
CurriculumSTEAM
Ernest Hemingway is a STEAM school, and therefore, our overarching units of study connect the content areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. 21st Century Skills are integrated into the daily instructional practices of the classroom.
Math
Teaching mathematics in 2nd grade involves activity based exploratoration using manipulatives to progress from concrete ideas to abstract concepts. Emphasis is on developing multiple strategies, and reasoning mathematical practices. Programs include IReady, DMTI, and other supplemental materials.
Reading and WritingReading instruction follows the McGraw Hill Wonders program with supplemental tools, programs, and assessments. Focus is on phonemic awareness and phonics with additional teaching of reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary.
Students are taught writing using the Write Now Right Now Program. Students develop their writing skills in a sequential order that begins with complete sentences and concludes with full paragraphs. Handwriting Without Tears teaches students correct letter formation.
Science, Social Studies and Health
As an essential part of the STEAM philosophy, students learn through overarching units of study that encourage higher order thinking. Programs include Foss Kits, Mystery Science, In Focus, Great Body Shop, and other supplemental materials.
